Partnership Publishing

We’re still working on the details of this business model, but here’s the gist of it.

The author(s) invest(s)

  • a manuscript
  • necessary revisions

FtQ Press invests

  • Cover design (a $400 value)
  • For physical books, interior design ($400 value)
  • A critique and line edit (minimum value of $1000)

There are out-of-pocket costs (ISBN number, printer set-up, manufacture and shipping of proofs) that we may negotiate or split.

Caveat: If, after the editing is done, the author decides not to publish with FtQ Press, the author will pay the  editing rate assessed at the beginning of the project based on the criteria on this Editing Services page. This will be in our contract.

Any cover and interior design work will remain the property of FtQ press unless the author wishes to pay the fee for the work.

You will own all rights to your book, but will license certain publishing rights to FtQ Press.

FtQ Press and the author will split evenly costs for marketing, promotion, and production costs above the initial author investment.  No funds will be spent without mutual agreement..

Platypus is the imprint for fiction. See the About Platypus page for what we will consider.

The initial publishing plan will encompass:

  • Print on Demand trade paperback publishing and distribution through Lightning Source (note that brick-and-mortar bookstores ordinarily do not stock POD books, but they can order them, and some bookstores will stock POD books on consignment).
  • e-book publishing through Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Nobel Nook, and Smashwords for other ebook formats.

This route makes the paperback book available for order on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and other Internet book marketing sites, and for the United Kingdom (Britain, Canada, Australia).

You will be able to order paperback books from Lightning Source for the cost to make them, which is much less than the sale rice.

If the author wishes to pay to print offset and warehouse books, FtQ Press has a relationship with a printer/distributor that we use for Flogging the Quill, Crafting a Novel that Sells.

50-50 split

Revenues are split evenly between FtQ Press and the author. Clearly, there can be no advances against royalties in the Partnership model.

Marketing will be a joint effort, with FtQ Press promoting from the platforms of the Flogging the Quill blog and this website. The author should create either a website or a blog--FtQ Press can assist with that.
